Visions of the Arctic from Florian Schulz on Vimeo.
"For many years now there has been strong interest in expanding oil drilling in the Alaskan Arctic, both on land and offshore. Many have considered the Arctic landscape a barren wasteland or a flat, white nothingness.
I take these sentiments as a personal challenge to document an extremely remote and mostly unknown area of North America — for a public that otherwise might never see it. It’s true that at first glance some areas may seem desolate or barren. But those same areas may be teeming with life just days later, with tens of thousands of migrating caribou, or wolves or grizzlies. For several years now..."

Spreading the word about the beauty of the Arctic and its looming threats is extremelly important, that is why conservation photographer Florian Schulz has teamed up with Earthjustice and outdoor clothing manufacturer Patagonia to create a stunning visual campaign to prevent offshore oil development in this fragile ecosystem.
Based on the Freedom to Roam video, we created a multimedia piece to talk about the need of protecting arctic environments against offshore oil and gas development. This is essential to maintain important corridors for migratory wildlife that highly depend on arctic environments during the summer months.

Visions of the Wild is the website of Florian Schulz Photography. For more than a decade Florian Schulz has immersed himself in the natural world following his passion for photography and conservation. Emil Herrera-Schulz, who shares in the same passion, joined the team in 2001. The results of their efforts are not only breathtaking images and stories from the wild, but also entire conservation campaigns such as their Freedom to Roam project focusing on the creation of wildlife corridors. It is Florian and Emil’s belief that visuals can dramatically further such conservation efforts. They will continue to pursue their dream to its fruition: the creation of the first “National Corridor.”
Florian’s strong desire to document entire ecosystems and convey a true sense of place demands his complete immergence in the field, often spending months at a time in the course of adventurous expeditions. Emil is frequently part of such expeditions, where she captures video and natural sound for their stunning multimedia productions.
Visions of the Wild provides a window into the natural world where one will witness nature as very few people have ever seen it before. In the images you will see Florian’s artistic eye. Through the text you will feel Florian and Emil’s passion for the wild places where wildlife still has the freedom to roam.
In their quest to raise awareness about wildlife corridors to allow migrations through connectivity, Florian and Emil have embarked on journeys to document the wildest corners of the Pacific Northwest. By sailboat, bush plane or on foot, Florian and Emil have discovered a land teaming with wildlife spectacles: from caribou migrating by the tens of thousands across the arctic plains, to breaching humpback whales in route to their breeding and birthing grounds, to the mass migration of western and Dunlin sandpipers crossing half the continent to reach their arctic nesting grounds. Expeditions full of discoveries and challenging experiences with nature are the foundation of the Freedom to Roam conservation photography project that Florian and Emil have undertaken to document a vital oceanic wildlife corridor, Baja to Beaufort (B2B).
The trailer focuses on the biodiversity of the American wilderness, but also emphasizes the arctic and its fragility under the increased pressure of global warming. This trailer was used to protest oil drilling in the Arctic during the 2008 United States presidential election.
