Speaking Engagements

As an advocate for conservation and wildlife corridors, Florian Schulz strongly believes photographs are more powerful when combined with compelling messages or personal stories. It has more of an impact on people's mind, it gets embedded within their thoughts and emotions. Through multimedia presentations, Florian speaks to reach out to the public at a personal level, to bridge the understanding between connectivity and the protection of the last wild remaining places in North America.

Florian Schulz is one of the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative’s most passionate ambassadors. His stunning photos capture the very essence of this magnificent region and skillfully illustrate the unique natural heritage that Y2Y is working to maintain and restore.  Florian’s remarkable book, Yellowstone to Yukon - Freedom to Roam, demonstrates to its readers why this area is so special, speaks to their hearts and moves them to become involved. He makes my job of conveying the magic, the issues and opportunities of the Y2Y region much easier.  I use his book constantly.

In his presentation, Florian not only talks about conservation, he also talks about his personal experience in the field as a human being, as a photographer and as partner. Being in the wild for many months at the time, can grant you with unbelievable moments as well as dangerous ones that have the power to mold your life forever.

"Of tireless stamina and creativity, Florian Schulz is a young photographer that will certainly rise like a shooting star. His passion and concern for the subjects he photographs come through in every image. "Yellowstone to Yukon Freedom to Roam" represents a unique vision for a threatened region and Schulz' images bring home the beauty and urgency of this critically important North American corridor. His photographic talent and his high ethical photographic standards, combined with a sincere conservation purpose have earned him a position in the prestigious International League of Conservation Photographers. This new organization is the home base of the best photographers in the world and Schulz is the youngest member ever admitted to the League."

Florian is a passionate photographer, and many people wonder how he manages to gather those unique images that keep the audience in awe. In his presentation, Florian gives special attention to photography, speaking about those moments when it seemed impossible to get an image. And so he shows the rewards of being patient and persistent once the images come to life after waited for hours in a blind or just out of pure stubbornness of waiting and waiting.

...Florian Schulz spoke in my Environmental Biology class to approximately 170 undergraduate students from a broad range of disciplines outside the sciences (philosophy, English, history, economics, etc.) and we were captivated. His talk was a vivid case study of species conservation in a stunning ecoregion that is rife with human conflicts over natural resource use and environmental concerns. Florian’s presentation "Yellowstone to Yukon Freedom to Roam" brought to life the topics we were discussing... He made an impression on these students that I think will last a lifetime. Florian has a gift for communication. He combines the type of knowledge one can get only from living in a region... with a passion for wildlife conservation and breathtaking photography. He is a fantastic spokesman for life – human and wild – in the region.

Florian dedicates all of his photography to long term conservation projects, and therefore he has the opportunity to immerse himself fully in an environment for several weeks at time. This allows him to understand the behavior of the animals, their body language and their patterns. He has spent hours at a blind photographing quetzals in the clouded forest of Mexico. Or spent three days in a row at a blind, to photograph snowy owls at their nest in the arctic tundra. He has spent months following the tracks of many grizzly bears in the lower 48's states and has seen incredible spectacles like the migratory season of the caribous in Alaska.

Florian Schulz’s presentation Freedom to Roam of his stunning photographs of the wildlife and people of the Yellowstone to Yukon, is tremendously inspiring.  He is a living illustration of the central role the arts must play in achieving conservation goals.  His ...commitment and deep knowledge of this largest North American conservation initiative made this evening one of the university's best events of the year

With his rich blend of word and image, Florian Schulz is a story-teller. His story is his dream: the one species who can read Yellowstone to Yukon may come to share his passion that the "freedom to roam" must apply to all those other species who inhabit this vanishing corridor of wilderness.

Since the publication of his book "Yellowstone to Yukon - Freedom to Roam", Florian has deliver over 80 lectures in the Americas and in Europe. He was invited by National Geographic to be part of the series "Heroes of the Planet" and was a speaker during the Microsoft Pro Photo Summit in 2008. Between others, he has spoken at the Cosmos Club, The Banff Film Festival, two World Wilderness Congresses (8th in Anchorage and 9th in Merida), numerous European Photography Festivals and multiple State Universities in the US and Canada.

"Florian's presentation on Y2Y brilliantly illustrates the connectedness across boundaries of nations for cooperative solutions to meta-nature-versus-man challenges. The Yukon being a specifically large and gorgeous place to begin. Deeply desiring to be in these places and to work to leave them in this condition for 7 generations forward, Florian strikes not a single heartchord but a symphony of color, shadow, and hope in those fortunate enough to be in his sphere of inspiration. I am eager to wander yet again in his book Yellowstone to Yukon Freedom to Roam."
